Product detailsThe 23/TU17 Explorer is selected when a clinician wants the familiar #23 Shepherd's Hook for general caries and margin checking, plus a second, more subgingival-capable tip on the same handle rather than switching instruments mid-exam. It is commonly used during periodontal screening and hygiene recall appointments where both occlusal and subgingival findings are being checked in the same pass.
The TU17 end carries a fine, angled, balanced tip designed for comfortable insertion into deeper pockets, where it is used to detect calculus deposits and root surface irregularities by tactile feedback. This gives the instrument a working end suited to depths the broader #23 hook is not built to reach comfortably.
Clinically, the #23 end is used for pit and fissure caries detection and margin checks, while the TU17 end is used to explore subgingival calculus and root roughness in periodontal pockets. SurgiWorld also stocks the #23 hook paired with a DG16 endodontic tip and a #6 general-purpose tip for clinicians who need a different second working end. Double-ended, medical-grade stainless steel, corrosion resistant, fully autoclavable.
