The Olsen Hegar Needle Holder is a widely used combination instrument in oral surgery and dental suturing. Its defining feature is the integration of suture scissors into the body of the needle holder - located on the shank just behind the needle-gripping jaws. This allows the clinician to complete both needle driving and suture cutting without putting down one instrument and picking up another, a particularly useful advantage during long suturing sessions or when working deep in the oral cavity.

At 13 cm in overall length, this is the shortest and most compact option in the Olsen Hegar range. The 13 cm size is appropriate for anterior procedures - upper and lower incisor and canine suturing, frenectomy site closure, biopsy wound closure, and labial tissue procedures where a shorter instrument improves visibility and reduces handle interference near the patient's lips and cheeks.

The cross-serrated jaws provide a firm grip on standard curved suture needles, maintaining needle position during tissue passage. The scissor blades are positioned to cut suture tails cleanly without tearing. The ratchet locking mechanism offers multiple locked positions for controlled jaw pressure.

The primary trade-off of a combination instrument is that both functions - needle driving and suture cutting - share the same instrument body. In very high-volume or technically complex suturing cases, some surgeons prefer separate instruments for each task. However, for routine dental suturing, the Olsen Hegar significantly streamlines the workflow.
