Clinical Use

The Palmer Rubber Dam Forceps, 17.5cm, are a staple instrument for reliable tooth isolation. The length gives the reach and leverage to position the rubber dam clamp accurately over the anchor tooth, even in the most posterior regions of the mouth.

Design and Handling

The forceps grip the clamp by its holes and expand it so it can pass over the crown of the tooth. The 17.5cm length helps with molars in the back of the mouth, where access is limited.

Place the clamp, release the forceps and check that the clamp is stable on the tooth before you stretch the dam over the bow.

Placing the Clamp

Seat the forceps beaks in the clamp holes, expand the clamp just far enough to pass over the greatest bulge of the tooth, then lower it to the gingival margin and release. Tie floss to the bow of the clamp before placement as a safety line, so it can be retrieved if it slips.

Check that the clamp jaws sit on sound tooth structure and do not pinch the gingiva. Reverse the process to remove the clamp.

Forceps should be checked for smooth hinge action and secure beak seating before sterilization, because a loose beak can let a clamp spring away during placement.

Material and Sterilization

Made from medical grade stainless steel. Autoclavable for repeated sterilization cycles. Clean and dry the instrument after each use, and check the working ends for wear or damage before it goes into the pouch.
