Clinical Use

The Straight How Pliers are a multi-purpose gripper with round, serrated tips. They are used to grasp archwires during placement and to make minor adjustments to elastics or ligatures.

Design and Handling

The round, serrated tips hold a wire securely without much pressure. They are used to seat an archwire into the bracket slots and to correct small problems, such as adjusting an elastic or ligature that is not seated correctly.

The straight pattern is a general-purpose choice, and an orthodontic tray usually has one at hand.

Care and Handling

Orthodontic pliers should be used only for the job they are made for. Check that the tips meet evenly before each use, and do not use these pliers to cut wire, which will damage the working surfaces. Keep the box joint free of resin and cement, and put a drop of instrument lubricant on it before sterilization so the pliers keep opening and closing smoothly.

Run a cloth or brush over serrations and grooves during cleaning, because debris trapped there reduces grip.

Pliers stored loose in a drawer can knock their tips out of alignment. Keep them in a cassette or tray so the beaks are protected between uses and the instrument is ready when the next patient sits down.

Material and Sterilization

Made from medical grade stainless steel. Autoclavable for repeated sterilization cycles. Clean and dry the instrument after each use, and check the working ends for wear or damage before it goes into the pouch.
